There are more than 500 of us in the Energy team and we are committed to being kaitiaki - guardians of New Zealand's future.We are expanding to facilitate the decarbonisation of our national electricity network and we're excited to be scaling up in our design team to meet this.About the rolePart of Downer's Engineering Solutions Division, reporting to the Northern Design Manager, you will be working on projects across our electricity distribution agreements in Downer
Energy's Northern Region. We partner with Electrical Distributors across the North Island to provide design and estimation services to Powerco, WEL, Vector and WE*.The Designer / Estimator is part of a team that is responsible for the design and estimation of; asset renewal projects, customer-initiated projects, major tenders and defects.A typical day for a Designer Estimator involves.
  • Getting out on site to investigate works and meet with customers.
  • Electrical Network Design using design and modelling software.
  • Engaging with internal delivery teams to develop works methodologies.
  • Preparing proposal and report documents.
  • Handing over comprehensive work packs to field teams for delivery
The work we carry out covers the breadth of electricity distribution industry and includes the following areas:
  • Overhead lines
  • Underground distribution
  • Substation works and protection schemes
  • Communications systems
  • Privately owned distribution networks
  • Grid connected generation (solar, wind, BESS and emergency generation systems)
Who are youThe Northern design team includes a diverse mix of people and we're looking for someone to join our team who is passionate about energy and has the following attributes:Knowledge of electricity distribution networks is essential. You could be an experienced Line Mechanic / Cable Jointer / Electrician with an interest in expanding your career into design, or an experienced Electrical Engineer or Designer/Estimator in the power distribution industry ready to hit the ground running. It is ideal if you can also offer:
  • Two years of experience in the power distribution industry
  • Design and pricing experience
  • Strong MS Office skills
  • Good written and verbal communication skills
  • Relevant qualifications in the Electricity field are desirable
  • Knowledge of electricity legislation and ability to work within industry standards
There are 2 fulltime roles available, working 40 hours per week, with a competitive salary, based on experience. You can choose to be based at any of our depots within the upper North Island including Mt Maunganui, Morrinsville, Paeroa, Matamata, Coromandel, hamilton or Auckland with travel to sites across the region as required.Ko wai matou | Our OrganisationWant to know more about what it is like to work at Downer?
