- A full and clean NZ driver's licence for at least 12 months or have completed an approved NZTA advanced driving course (if full licence held for less than 12 months)
- 18 years of age or over
- New Zealand citizenship or permanent resident status
- Clean Police record
- Pass the St John assessment requirements (physical, interview, literacy/numeracy test)
- Pass pre-appointment health questionnaire
- NZQA recognised training from the leading provider of pre-hospital emergency care in the country
- Become a First Responder and able to apply to progress toward gaining the National Diploma in Ambulance

- Once accepted, your online and classroom training will take around 6-9 months to complete.
- Availability for regular duty and training (approximately two 12-hour shifts and one training session per month)
- A minimum number of hours are needed to become a first responder. In Auckland this will mostly be through attending events, when you are more experienced you have the opportunity to attend ambulance shifts.
- A two-day Operations Induction course.
- A two-day Operations Risk Management course which is designed to help you stay safe in the field.
- A two-day Ambulance Driving course (where driving is part of your role) which is supported by online learning and the completion of a driving logbook.
- A four-day First Responder course which is designed to enable you to assess patients and manage immediately life-threatening emergencies in the community. This is supported by online learning and the completion of a First Responder Student workbook.
