Job Description:Mō te tūranga | About the roleThe primary emphasis of this role focuses on Rocky Reef Ecology.The role will offer a variety of opportunities given the diverse coastal environments in the region.Includes the application and development of fine-scale indicators of environmental state, in addition to furthering understanding on the distribution of rocky reef habitats.Technical knowledge and advice on issues relating to rocky reef ecology, coastal biodiversity and marine management.Designing environmental monitoring programmes, including state of the environment reporting and environment indicators.Training staff in the identification of rocky reef species (e.g. invertebrates, macroalgae, fish), monitoring techniques and the analysis of data.Developing capability to understand interactions between land and sea, and the impacts of catchment activities on reef ecosystems.Undertaking research to fill knowledge gaps relevant to Council.Strategic advice to support the implementation of regional and national policies.Providing expert evidence in relation to RMA resource consent and plan hearings.Providing advice to internal and external stakeholders.The use of models as decision-support tools and the management of large and complex datasets.Mō te tangata | About youSound knowledge of Rocky Reef Ecology in the New Zealand context.An experienced individual who is an organised and strategic thinker.Be highly motivated.Maintain high standards and rigour in their work, including reporting and publications.Have a basic understanding of the Resource Management Act.Be able to programme in R, or equivalent statistical software for data analysis.Mō ngā pūkenga | Qualifications and experienceAn MSc or PhD in coastal/marine ecology or aquatic sciences.A proven track record in scientific investigations and analysis, reporting and information delivery.Knowledge of rocky reef flora and fauna, identifications skills.Experience with GIS or Mātauranga Māori is advantageous.2-5 years' work experience in the field of coastal or environmental science.Strong ability to work within a team.Excellent communication skills – written and verbal.Undertake fieldwork and be a capable swimmer.Full NZ Drivers licence.Mō te tīma | About the teamThe position is in the Coastal and Marine Science Team in the Environmental Science Section.We are responsible for monitoring, analysing and reporting on the state of the marine environment, and leading investigations that help address management of the Waikato Coastal Marine Area (CMA).Mō te tuku tono | How to applyApplicants will be reviewed as they come in and this role will close on 7 September 2025.For a copy of the role description, pleaseIf you have any questions about the role, please contactPlease click "Apply" and include your CV and Cover Letter as a Pdf.
