We're proud to be Aotearoa's UNESCO City of Design, blending rich heritage with modern innovation.About the roleWe're seeking a skilled and motivated Technical Operations Lead to join our Venues & Events team, in this full time permnanent position.Based across Whanganui's iconic venues - the Royal Whanganui Opera House, War Memorial Centre, and Cooks Gardens Events Centre - you'll be responsible for leading and coordinating all aspects of technical operations. From staging and lighting to sound, rigging, and production management, this role ensures our events run smoothly and to the highest standard.You'll manage a team of technicians and contractors, work directly with promoters, hirers, and community groups, and oversee the planning and delivery of technical production requirements. This is a hands-on role where you'll balance leadership, planning, and technical delivery - helping us create unforgettable experiences for the Whanganui community and visitors alike.What you'll bring
5+ years' experience across theatre and live event technical operations (lighting, sound, staging, rigging, video).
Strong leadership and people management skills, with experience rostering, training, and supporting technical teams.
Knowledge of the Guide to Safe Work Practices in NZ Theatre & Entertainment Industry and relevant health & safety requirements.
Excellent organisational skills, able to manage multiple productions and deadlines.
Strong communication and relationship-building skills with a wide range of stakeholders.
A current NZ driver's licence.
Desirable:
Senior-level expertise in lighting, audio, or vision, with a well-rounded understanding of all areas preferred.
Budget management experience.
Understanding of local government environments.
Working at Heights certification, live-streaming or LED wall experience.
Additional requirementsThis role requires flexibility to work evenings, weekends, and public holidays as dictated by the events schedule.What we offer
