Mō te tūranga | About the roleAs a Ranger you will assist with all biodiversity tasks for the Tongariro District. This includes weed control, animal pest control (trapping, pesticides and shooting), threatened fauna and flora monitoring and supporting engagement with local iwi and community groups to support their conservation aspirations.You will be working with an experienced and dedicated team of Bio rangers (based at Whakapapa and Ohakune), focused on protecting the flora and fauna of the Tongariro District, which encompasses nearly 150 thousand hectares of the varied landscapes of Tongariro National Park and surrounding public conservation land. The wider DOC Tongariro team includes a group of likewise dedicated teammates looking after, huts and tracks, public safety, public access and engagement.Ngā pūkenga me ngā wheako | Skills and experienceIf you have some of following, we are keen to hear from you:
  • Animal pest trapping experience
  • The confidence and ability to work alone off track in the NZ bush using GPS and compass.
  • Be physically fit, practically minded, have a can-do attitude and is someone who wants to get things done. The work takes place in rough and varied terrain, the work is very physically demanding.
  • Good practice in health & safety is essential.
  • Good verbal and written communication
  • A full New Zealand driver's license is essential
Desirable:
  • River safety skills and qualifications
  • Rafting experience and qualifications
  • Four-wheel driving qualifications and off-road experience
  • Light Utility Vehicle (LUV) qualifications and experience
  • A current first aid certificate
  • Growsafe & Approved Handler certifications
