Health New Zealand (HNZ) is the largest organisation in New Zealand by a substantial margin, with a Board overseeing an entity with over 90 thousand employees. The role functions in one of the most challenging governance environments in NZ, which includes a government appointed Board Observer and Ministerial Committee for Health Infrastructure which will become a permanent Board committee in HNZ once currently proposed changes to the Pae Ora (Healthy Futures) 2022 Act have been made, as well as Board Committees and hybrid Board/management committees.This role, which is functionally outside the management of HNZ, is a senior governance role reporting directly to the Board Chair and overseeing the work of the Board Secretariat. The position is central to strengthening the Board's independence, governance capability, and strategic oversight. Alongside the Chair, the Board Secretary will lead in an advisory and practical capacity to ensure that the Board is able to:
shape and drive its strategic priorities,
undertake its role as primary monitor of the health system, and
assess and strengthen the performance of the Board, its directors, and Committees.
You have extensive experience at a senior level in the public sector, deep understanding of governance and are skilled in synthesizing complex information and supporting high-quality decision-making.
