The critical care department is made up of 16 intensive care beds and 12 HDU beds in a modern purpose built facility. New technology surrounds this department. Registrars work across the critical care looking after arguably the broadest range of patients in New Zealand. The patient population includes a large volume trauma centre, a neurosurgical ICU, cardiac surgery ICU, general adult ICU and limited paediatric ICU. Registrars are involved in transport across the Te Manawa Taki regional hospitals by helicopter, plane and road.Registrars are expected to work hard but will reap the rewards of experience with procedures and development of important decision making skillsPlease note - it is your responsibility to provide three current references. Weekly teaching involves specialists and registrars and bed side teaching is the norm including teaching in echocardiography.About youAs a ICU Registrar, you will ideally be;
  • PGY3 or equivalent at the time of application.
  • If applying from PGY 2, you must have completed at least three acute runs during PGY 1&2 years, preferably including Emergency Medicine, acute Medicine and/or acute General Surgery.
  • Preference will be given to those with clinical experience at registrar level, especially prior to Critical Care work.
  • Eligible to work in New Zealand
This role gives experience in patient assessment and resuscitation, learning to manage the acutely ill and injured patients, and includes some paediatric high dependency level patients. You will be actively involved in the hospital wide MET (Medical Emergency Team) and attend Cardiac arrest calls, take patient referrals and work within Critical Care. The nature of Critical Care work is physically, mentally and emotionally demanding with a patient mortality rate higher than other roles in the hospital.
