The Te Manawa Taki Hepatitis C Service, delivered in partnership with Odyssey and DISC, is an amazing, innovative outreach service that supports increased Hepatitis C (Hep C) point of care testing and treatment, amongst people who inject drugs (PWID) and others who are at risk of Hep C.We are now seeking four dedicated, part time, Peer Navigators for this service each working 20 hours per week.This Hamilton based role with regional travel is a great opportunity for you to be involved in the delivery of a high-quality culturally appropriate service. This is your chance to utilise your strong community and people engagement, relationship building and promotion skills to raise awareness of best practice in harm reduction and really make a difference to your community by facilitating access to treatment for people in need.Please note that as this is a Peer based role having lived experience (of Hepatitis C and/or injecting drug use) could be really beneficial to you and the impact you will be able to make.In this role you will work closely with our Service Manager and two harm reduction Registered Nurses to deliver Hep C testing at vibrant and educational community outreach events in partnership with kaupapa Māori providers and other pivotal community stakeholders.You're also going to be involved in supporting some key aspects of the mobile service delivery, so it operates like a well-oiled machine, from administering testing processes for service users to delivering outstanding community outreach events.As you can imagine strong established relationships are crucial to the success of this type of service, especially with kaupapa Māori providers, community groups, social services, Corrections and other mental health and addiction services throughout the Te Manawa Taki region. If you feel that you have the ability to create and maintain authentic individual and community-based relationships, then make sure you tell us all about it.We also have some great resources (equipment, supplies including a dedicated service vehicle!) so you will also need to ensure that you are on top of all aspects related to supporting the management of these including our service vehicle.We are still working on what the final days and hours of work this role look like, but they will generally be worked between Monday and Friday. Some flexibility will be required from time to time though to attend the odd community event that is scheduled in the weekend.Our ideal applicants will have:
  • Lived experience of injecting drug use and/or addiction, and/or experience living with a blood-borne virus.
  • Experience in community-facing or peer support roles is helpful.
  • Willing to learn Hep C testing and about treatment options.
  • Understanding of the challenges people who use drugs may face, including stigma and discrimination.
  • A current full New Zealand driver's licence.
  • Willing to develop digital and basic computer skills.
  • Willing to learn about Te Tiriti o Waitangi and how it applies in your work.
