We are committed to upholding Te Tiriti o Waitangi; we aspire to having a workforce reflective of the communities we serve and achieving equitable outcomes for all.The anaesthetic workload at this large tertiary teaching centre is busy, dynamic, clinically challenging, diverse and interesting. We provide approximately 32,000 anaesthetic episodes per year for all surgical services (except cardio-thoracic and neurosurgery). In addition to general surgery, orthopaedics, urology, otorhinolaryngology, ophthalmology and gynaecology; we are home to the National Burns Centre, and receive tertiary regional referrals for acute spinal injuries, mangled limb, plastic surgery, hands, and maxillofacial surgery. Up to 10% of our patients are low complexity paediatrics. Our tertiary obstetric centre delivers over 7000 babies annually. To meet these demands CM District anaesthetists are collegial, flexible and skilled team members. Our anaesthetists have a true generalist skillset, though work together as a team to solve problems using individuals’ subspecialty interests and experience.CM District surgical services operate over two sites. Middlemore Hospital is an 800-bed teaching hospital with anaesthetic services provided for 14 theatres, a busy Birthing and Assessment Unit, plus small amount of off-the-floor work in MRI, CT, interventional radiology, a newly built gastroenterology and respiratory procedural suite, and procedural sedation for pacemaker insertion in the cardiac cath lab or dressing changes on the National Burns unit. Middlemore Hospital has one of the busiest acute surgical units in Australasia, requiring specialist cover on-site in the evenings and weekends to support 7 fellows and 28 anaesthesia trainees. Eight kilometres away, Manukau Surgical Centre has 10 theatres, 60 post-surgical beds, an Anaesthetic Preassessment Clinic and an Anaesthetic-led four-bed Perioperative Care Unit that provides close observation and 2:1 nursing ratio. We also provide acute, complex and chronic pain management across both sites.
