Guided by the mission “To provide compassionate care for all those experiencing life limiting illnesses,” the Hospice is deeply embedded in the community, delivering excellence in palliative care through a team of dedicated professionals and volunteers.About The Role:This is more than a leadership role - it's a chance to make a lasting impact on people's lives.South Canterbury Hospice Inc is seeking a visionary and values-driven General Manager to lead the organisation into its next chapter. Reporting to the Governance Board, the General Manager will be responsible for the strategic, financial, and operational leadership of the Hospice, ensuring it continues to deliver exceptional care while remaining sustainable and responsive to community needs. The role has a business development focus, developing and overseeing delivery of the funding strategy.This role offers the opportunity to work alongside a passionate team, engage with the wider South Canterbury community, contribute to regional alliances, and represent the Hospice at regional and national levels.Key Responsibilities:
  • Champion the Hospice's mission, vision, and values across all levels of the organisation.
  • Lead strategic planning, budgeting, and operational performance.
  • Foster a positive, inclusive, and resilient organisational culture.
  • Collaborate closely with the Clinical Nurse Manager to support clinical excellence.
  • Maintain strong relationships with funders, partners, and community groups.
  • Represent the Hospice in public forums, media, and stakeholder engagements.
  • Drive fundraising initiatives and oversee retail operations.
  • Ensure compliance with all legislative, regulatory, contractual, and health & safety obligations.
  • Oversee facility and asset management, ensuring a safe and welcoming environment.
  • Collaborate regionally and nationally to ensure Hospice South Canterbury continues to meet the palliative care needs of our community.
  • Work with the Hospice Foundation, the funding organisation of Hospice South Canterbury.
Skills & Experience:The ideal candidate is a seasoned leader with a heart for service and a head for strategy. You will bring senior management experience, particularly in health, community, or not-for-profit sectors, and be confident in financial oversight, risk management, and operational planning.You will also be a natural communicator, someone who builds trust, inspires teams, and engages meaningfully with diverse stakeholders. Local connections would be an advantage.Personally, you will be empathetic, culturally aware, and deeply committed to inclusive care, with an understanding of the emotional demands of hospice work. Key will be your ability to foster a supportive environment for staff and volunteers and to show willingness to contribute beyond the job description, including attending community events and speaking publicly.
